Treetops Hospice Charity Appealby Richard Turner |
|
At the end of April 2004 my Mum was diagnosed as having terminal cancer, which my Dad also lost the battle to. She thought she had beaten cancer from over 10 years ago but now we think she has between 5 months and 5 years. It all depends on whether the chemotherapy works to shrink the cancer and prolong her life. We're hoping for 5 years. Well I've been feeling really down, not knowing how best to help her, but there isn't really anything I can do except be there for her. I wanted to do something special, and seeing as she always supported my cycling since I was a nipper, I decided I would enter the Great Notts Bike ride. This is a charitable event based on a 50 mile course. There are four main charities for the event but I will be raising money for the Treetops Hospice. "The Treetops Hospice is a registered Charity providing care for people with potentially life shortening illness and their carers. The hospice is a place where everyone works together to create a homely, caring atmosphere where patients feel able to laugh, cry, form friendships and just be themselves; where the anxiety which is often associated with the word "hospice" is dispelled, all with an emphasis on love, life and humour." When she first encountered cancer, the hospice, based in Risley, cared for her. The experience inspired her and since her remission she worked there for many years, as as a volunteer. She's now been forced to retire from her activities and focus on her own health. I would be grateful for any contributions for the hospice, which relies upon charitable donations. Please call into the Long Eaton Cycle Centre where I work for Tris. Or else, see me on a Tuesday evening at the time trial. You can always email me at Richard23t@aol.com to pledge support.
